Ebikes naturally weigh more than non-electric bikes. The main factors are the motor and the battery. Motors will typically weigh more than batteries. So how much does an e-bike battery weigh?
Electric bike batteries typically weigh around 7 pounds (3.5kg). Some batteries weigh as little as 3.3 pounds (1.5kg) and as much as 12.6 pounds (5.7kg). Battery weight is largely defined by battery capacity. The higher the battery capacity, the more the battery weighs.
Ebike Battery Weights
After looking at dozens of electric bikes, from small foldable bikes to larger all-terrain bikes, the avg battery weight seems to be around 7 pounds. And if you are choosing a new bike, keep in mind on many bikes, you can still ride without a battery.
Rad Power Bikes is a good example to look at. The Rad Power Bike battery weighs 7.7lbs.
Juiced Bikes have 4 different battery packs:
Battery | Voltage | Amp-Hours Capacity | Weight (lbs) | Weight (kg) |
Standard | 48V | 8.8Ah | 7.2lb | 3.3kg |
Extended | 48V | 12.8Ah | 7.2lb | 3.3kg |
Super Extended | 52V | 13.0Ah | 10.6lb | 4.8kg |
Hyper Extended | 52V | 19.2Ah | 12.6lb | 5.7kg |
I even took a little at small foldable electric bikes. The lightest battery I found on a foldable electric bike was on the Ancheer 20 Inch Wheel Folding City Commuter Electric Bike. This battery is 36V 8Ah and weighs just under 5lbs (2.2kg).
But not all folding bikes have batteries that weigh a few pounds. It was still common to find batteries on foldable bikes that weighed over 7lbs, such as the ECOTRIC 20″ Fat Tire Folding Electric Bike, which weighs 7 pounds 6 ounces (3.4kg).
The absolute lightest battery I found for an electric bike was on the Propella Bike. Propella bikes are purposely designed to be lightweight, and it shows. Their bikes batteries weigh only 3.3 LBS (1.5 KG). This battery still has a range of 20-40 mile range and can be recharged in 2.5 hours.
